About Us
The Georgetown County Historical Society began in 1955 when seven local residents gathered together to discuss the possibility of starting an historical society. From those early beginnings, we have now grown into a viable, significant organization with a mission of preserving, protecting, and promoting the rich heritage and history of Georgetown County.
The humble beginning of a museum to house this history was two display cases in the Georgetown County Library with some items donated by residents. Today, the Society operates a modern two-story, climate controlled, multipurpose
building which houses offices of the Historical Society and a museum showcasing artifacts that tell the story of our rich heritage and unique culture.
The Georgetown County Historical Society has been active in public affairs by lending support when appropriate as preservationists. We work with Georgetown County officials and other entities to ensure that pieces of our cultural heritage
are not lost to development or neglect in areas rich in history.
Educational programs are conducted that highlight many elements of our history. School groups are welcomed by Museum educators to enhance knowledge and support curriculum standards as well as give children a sense of their heritage.
The Georgetown County Historical Society is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Support comes from member dues, sales in our Rice Trunk Gift Shop, donations, and fundraisers. We receive no income from any governmental agency.
